2008 Fall Welcome - Chris Martin

Hello Everyone!!

Hope you've all had a nice summer! You'll notice here, that I have done something quite profound; I have referred to Summer in the past-tense. And what does that mean? It's almost Band Season again! So, as you continue to read this email with bitterness/ eagerness for the 'cooler, and more musical' half of the year I thought I would give you all a quick update on what's new with Saskatoon Brass Band. (for those of you who are lazy, or just don't have enough time, I have put the important words in bold for you).

First things first. SBB has a New rehearsal venue!! After 'a few' years at Third Avenue, it has been decided that a new venue is due. So it is with much pleasure, that I announce to you that we will now be rehearsing at Grace Westminster Church. Located just off of Broadway, this new venue will open opportunities for acoustic variance as well as provide the band with the possibility of having a joint concert with one of the choirs or groups that also use the hall. (rehearsal times are remaining the same). Enter through the side doors to the right of the main doors on 10th St.E. (Round the corner from the Bulk Cheese Warehouse). The norm still applies, please bring your own music stands.

Second, it is with excitement and anticipation, that the committee has agreed on the formation of a second band. The Secondary band, or Bridge City Brass, will be open to everyone currently in the main band, as well as to new players old and young. The idea is that this band will be of a lesser standard, and have a more relaxed playing style. Thus enabling younger players and less experienced players the opportunity to play in a band, and at the same time create a feed of potential players for SBB. Bridge City will rehearse at the same venue but on Thursday evenings. Keep your eyes open for more details to follow! If anyone knows of someone that might want to come and play bring them along or refer them to Will or Erin. Anyone in the main band that wants to come play is encouraged to at no extra cost/yearly fee.

Third, instrument rental fees have changed. Due to various costs, it has been decided that a yearly fee of $25 will be due for every instrument on loan from the band. This is in addition to a one-time $25 refundable deposit. These fees will take affect as of September 1st 2008 (or our first rehearsal). If you have an instrument on loan from the band, please speak to a committee member about this. We will be tracking you down, but if you come speak to us it makes our lives easier. Anyone who avoids paying the fee will be forced to return their instrument and play either a stringed instrument or a flute (to be determined by the committee). -this last statement is entirely false, and does not reflect the opinion of the committee, just the Secretary).

Fourth, A suggestion has been put forth of having a SBB Quartet/Quintet type group. This group can be made up of varying players, and can be rotated if need be. The idea is that we would then be able to offer a group for smaller gigs, without having to worry about being too big, or scrambling to find players willing to form a group at the last minute. Anyone interested in this proposal is asked to let the committee (preferably Chris or Doug) know. -There are no current plans for a regular rehearsal date, but these things can be arranged between the vested interests.

Fifth, Please view the attached document listing the already booked or proposed concert dates and add them to your calendar!!!! This year the band is taking on a larger repertoire of concert venues. This is aimed at increasing awareness of the band as well as building our 'fan-base' and of course our income!

Sixth, (and lastly) Mr Heckman is requesting that anyone who happened to make a copy of Year of the Dragon could please take a look over it. If you did not make a copy you may call Terry and he will sing your part to you over the phone and you may rehearse with him by ear. (please do not call Terry to do this, he may charge by the note).

Thanks guys, and I will see you in a few weeks!!
